Learning not Lonely

Ferndown University of the Third Age was founded in 1997 and is part of a nationwide movement that promotes lifelong learning. Currently there are over 600 members, from Ferndown and the surrounding areas. It is a voluntary organisation for retired and semi-retired people to meet together and learn new skills. Social events and visits are also arranged – study tours of Girona, Spain and Malta are among visits organised.

It is not a University in the traditional way, as there are neither entry qualifications nor examinations. Group subjects are as varied as table tennis and badminton, to languages, history and art, with several bridge groups playing during the week.

You may ask ‘What is the ‘Third Age?’ It’s when you’ve finished working or bringing up a family and have more time to follow your interests. Members have very varied experiences and acquire diverse skills during their lives and some are able to share these by offering educational, creative and leisure activities. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal.

New members are always welcome!
